How we work
We explore how data and AI interact with society; examine which governance models work in the public interest; and interrogate power imbalances
We focus our research, practice and policy engagement on the following objectives:
- Explore how people and society are being affected by AI, and what ‘AI in the public interest’ could mean.
- Evidence and shape the use of AI and data-driven technologies where they most impact people and society, with a focus on the public sector.
- Evaluate and inform incentives for managing AI risks.
- Examine vehicles for the redistribution of power and opportunity across society.
Our projects prioritise cross-team collaboration across four research domains.
Research domains
Emerging Technology & Industry Practice
Ensuring that the benefits of new technologies are distributed equitably and that potential harms are prevented.
Law & Policy
Interrogating how existing and emerging AI and data law, regulation, governance and policy meets the needs of people and society.
Public Participation & Research
Ensuring that the voices of people affected by data and AI contribute to building and shaping evidence, research, policy and practices.
Social and Economic Policy
Shaping how political choices and public services will be designed in the information age.
