Job vacancy: Head of Research

9 October 2019

The Ada Lovelace Institute is seeking a Head of Research to define, develop and implement our research agenda.

Salary circa £58,000 – £62,000 per annum dependent upon experience

About the Ada Lovelace Institute

The Ada Lovelace Institute is a research and deliberative body with a mission to ensure that data and AI work for people and society. Ada works at the intersection of research, policy, technology and public engagement, reaches stakeholders from across the public and private sectors, and aims to ensure that the development of new data driven technologies is informed by rigorous research into their ethical and societal impacts.

As a new organisation, Ada is in the process of building a small and diverse team of individuals with a wide variety of professional backgrounds in human rights, science, philosophy, law and software engineering. We are actively seeking to bring diverse ideas and identities into the Ada Lovelace Institute, and to explore novel and innovative ways of researching, influencing policy and engaging the public.

The role

We are now looking to hire a Head of Research to define, develop and implement our research agenda. Whilst the role is envisaged to be full-time, we are open to secondments or fixed-term appointments which may allow for potential applicants to temporarily step away from an existing academic or private sector post.

The Head of Research will work collaboratively with the Ada team to develop Ada’s organisational strategy and vision, providing expert advice on how Ada can draw from, synthesise, support and amplify existing and new research to achieve its strategic aims.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in inter-disciplinary academic research, and an ability to think creatively about using research to achieve policy objectives. Our Head of Research will need familiarity with the research landscape in the UK and, over time, will build familiarity with the international research landscape.

Ada is an organisation working on topics which cross-sect the humanities, social sciences and computer sciences. We are open to hiring a Head of Research with a background in any of those disciplines; what is important is that they will be enthusiastic about bridging disciplines, building networks of researchers across domains and bringing together diverse research to support Ada’s strategic objectives.

As the Ada team grows, the Head of Research will manage staff assigned to the Research Team, as well as fellows and interns, and will have budgetary responsibility. Given that Ada is a small organisation, the post holder must be willing to turn their hand to a wide variety of tasks, large and small, and relish the opportunity to be part of a start-up initiative. In an organisation working on cutting edge and fast-paced issues, the Head of Research will be an integral part of a flexible team that will prioritise close collaboration, interdisciplinary approaches and dynamic ways of working.
